Kevin Mack is known for his vivid, abstract sculptures. He enjoys experimenting with the abstract visual language of shapes and colors, which is one of my favorite things about his work. My sculptures are heavily inspired by his work, because I feel like his unique shapes and color blasts successfully capture the unexplainable feelings in the human mind, which is the goal of my series of sculptures. His work is mainly centered around the idea of intelligent artificial-life, which is why he incorporates intelligent, artificial-life creatures as an integral part of the virtual world to show how they exhibit complex emergent behavior. My favorite sculpture series of his is Blortasia, which is an abstract art world in the sky where you fly freely through a surreal maze of evolving sculptures that are engineered to rejuvenate your mind and body. It is designed to inspire awe and engage the imagination through shape, color, motion, sound, and spatial presence. Instead of recreating art from the real world, Blortasia explores virtual reality as an aesthetic medium in and of itself. Blortasia transports you into an art installation unconstrained by the limits of ordinary reality. I want my art to reach this level of impact, because I want my sculptures to explore the realities of the mind and to evoke psychological reactions of the audience.
I recently attended the VMFA Lecture about Japanese Aesthetics, and I found what I learned really interesting. I expected to hear more about the art specifically and the styles on their own, but I learned more about Japan’s history and culture which influenced the art styles. The lecture touched on various aspects such as religion, emperors, architecture, and clothing. I realized that their art goes far beyond just the aesthetic, but the history plays a significant role, which is why the lecture was centered around history.
Visual Designers are responsible for producing elements such as icons, graphics, buttons, and images that appear on websites and mobile devices. They also create branding projects from the ground up, develop campaigns, lead a team of designers, provide quality art and creative direction, and design apps, websites, and onsite digital experiences. In order to officially become a visual designer, you will need a Bachelor’s Degree and 5-7 years of experience.
William Neer works as a curatorial assistant at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. He started as an intern from VCU where he double majored in art history and history. His job responsibilities include research, providing tours, and exhibition management. Everyone is assigned a certain exhibition, but still works with other groups at the museum. Neer really enjoys interacting with the visitors and seeing all of the research put into effect. He wishes to pursue a career in museum education.
Another art-related career is interior design. An interior designer is responsible for meeting with clients to discuss their needs, planning the space, purchasing furnishings, and making the environment suitable for their needs. In order to become an interior designer, you should have a sense of creativity and be able to work spatially. You should also have at least a bachelor's degree in interior design, or a related field such as architecture, design. visual arts, etc. A few of the top schools for interior design are Converse College, Salem College, Marywood University, Maryville University of St. Louis, and Auburn University.
Here, I am adding heavy gel to the drawing to add texture. This is my first time using heavy gel, so this is really an experimental process. Applying the gel was easier than I expected.
An art related career that I am very interested in and would like to pursue is Architecture and Design. Architects are responsible for designing buildings and making sure they are fit for construction. First, they are hired by a client to design an ideal building that the client has in mind. This is where the art comes in, because the drawings will be detailed and specific according to the client’s preferences. Then, the architect would have to incorporate math and science to turn the drawing into a construction plan and to make sure the building is in line with the client’s budget and can realistically be constructed.
In order to become an architect, you must have either a Bachelor of Architecture degree or a Master of Architecture degree. Another requirement is a three year training period called the “Architectural Experience Program.” During this period, you will be trained by a licensed Architect and will gain experience in all the necessary areas. The three most common majors for this career are Architecture, Architectural Engineering, and Interior Design. The top 4 Schools with architecture programs in Virginia are University of Virginia, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Hampton University, and Norfolk State University. This is a synthesis piece of my passion in learning other cultures and my interest in Architecture. The Colosseum drawings, along with the 3-D structure of the letters, represent Architecture, while the color scheme and the word "ciao" represent my love for Italian culture. In this painting, I showed my interest in Architecture with the lighthouse, along with a scene of nature which I find to be important to Architecture. My passion for other cultures is displayed at the bottom where I wrote "I love you" in different languages on the colorful land. The different colors represent the diversity in the various cultures of the world.
